STEVENSON’S KOUTOUKAS

Stevenson’s Koutoukas
Rosalind Stevenson / 1978 / 9 minutes / 16mm / black & white / sound on separate tape / 24 fps
With H.M. Koutoukas and The School for Gargoyles
This film is a nine-minute portrait of H.M. Koutoukas during a rehearsal of his play “The Butterfly Encounter” at The Theater for the New City in 1978. It opens with him in a freeze-frame close-up and then breaks into motion as the camera follows him, now rehearsing an actor, now conferring with the musical director, now instructing a chorus of ‘mist people,’ now giving direction to the stage manager. Always in performance himself, Koutoukas is like a concertmaster with his attention on every instrument as the camera moves inside of that attention. With a final sweeping gesture he removes his hat, lowers his head, and all motion stops.
